How to keep fresh flowers longer during the summer

The heat wave brings extra concern on how to keep your flowers looking bright and fresh during the heat. When you get an arrangement from So Blooming Beautiful we always explain how to keep your flowers for longer but with this weather, you need to ensure your new flower arrangement lasts as long as possible. Here are some tips during these hot days:

  • Keep the temperature of your flowers as consistent as possible.

  • If your flowers came in plastic, remove this as soon as possible.

  • Keep flowers cool – store them in the coolest room of the house.

  • Keep flowers away from drafts and direct sunlight - it will kill them in a day or two.

  • Keep your vase filled with water. Hot flowers will drink lots of extra water.

  • If you have flowers in a vase with water, wash the vase with soap when you change the water, Otherwise, the bacteria clinging to the sides will contaminate your new water.

  • When changing the water, cut the stems but use a sharp, non-serrated knife to cut a quarter of an inch off the bottom of the stems, at an angle. While you’re at it, cut off those leaves below the water line. They breed bacteria.

  • If your flowers came in a container with foam, add fresh water every day.

  • Remove any dead or dying flowers from the arrangement.

  • Keep them away from fruit as it emits ethylene gas, so even in a separate bowl a few inches away, it’s a sure flower killer.
